FEDIOL CO2 emission monitoring

In 2023, FEDIOL has set up a programme to monitor the CO2 emissions of its members’ manufacturing sites. This initiative aims to inform companies of their relative performance and facilitate reaching climate goals as committed to under the Code of Conduct on responsible food business and marketing practices,

The FEDIOL CO2 emission monitoring captures data from:

  • 2019 onwards.
  • Sites that are operating under the EU CO2 emission trading system (ETS) as well as non-ETS sites.
  • CO2 emissions
    • By the site (“scope 1”).
    • From electricity or steam purchased from a third party (“scope 2”).
  • Emissions of core FEDIOL activity, which are: oilseed processing, vegetable oil refining and further processing of vegetable oil. Other CO2 emissions by the site, such as those as a result of electricty production for third parties, chocolate production, bottling and biodiesel production are kept out of the monitoring programme.
  • The following participating member companies: AAK, ADM, Avril, Bunge, Cargill, Cereal Docks, Fuji Oil, Olenex, Sime Darby Oils, Sovena, Tampieri, Thywissen and covering (EU 27 and UK).

Data from individual manufacturing sites submitted to the FEDIOL secretariat are reported only as aggregated emissions.

CO2 emission results for the years 2019-2022

The CO2 emissions of the participating FEDIOL companies are presented as aggregated CO2 emitted of all companies (in 1,000 tons) and as ton CO2 emitted per ton of raw material processed. The latter result is broken down into one for sites processing oilseeds and crude oils (“integrated crushing/refining sites”) and one for sites processing crude vegetable oils and/or further processing these (“stand-alone refining/further processing”). In both cases, the result of CO2 emissions in tons of CO2 per ton of raw material processed was calculated by taking the sum of the CO2 emissions of all the sites and by dividing that by the sum of the raw materials processed by the sites. All CO2 emission results should be read as emissions of CO2 equivalents (“CO2e”). The results can be found in the table below.

Table. CO2 emissions of FEDIOL sites (EU-27 plus UK) for consecutive years

The results show a decline in aggregated CO2 emissions of participating FEDIOL companies over the period of four years of 9.5%. With this number these companies outperform the reduction of CO2 emission allowances under the EU emission trading system ETS, which over the period 2019 up to and including 2022 was -7.7%. The results also show for participating FEDIOL companies over the same period, a reduction in CO2 emissions per ton of raw material processed between 6 and 7% for both groups of activities, i.e. integrated crushing/refining and stand-alone refining/further processing of oils.

More than 40 crushing/refining sites submitted data under this programme, representing 31 million tons of oilseed processed and 7.2 million tons of crude oil refined. Around 15 stand-alone refining/further processing sites submitted data, representing 3.5 million tons of crude oils refined plus 1.2 milion tons of refined oils further processed.
