Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy (KBBE)
The concept of the Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy (KBBE) was initiated in 2005. At that time, a special theme for the Bio-Economy was created in the 7th Framework Programme, dedicating nearly 2 billion euro to Food, Agriculture and Fisheries and Biotechnology research. The Bio-Economy ties in a wide range of interfacing European policies, not least Climate and Energy, the Common Agricultural Policy, Research and Development and Industrial policies.
In 2010, with the approval of the Europe 2020 Strategy and the ambition achieve a greener growth and to turn Europe into a smart, sustainable and resource efficient economy, there is need to take stock of progress made and to develop a sustainable Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy Strategy aimed at reinforcing European leadership in the biosciences.
