Voluntary Roundtable Initiatives

The development of international feedstock-specific roundtables remains the most appropriate way for promoting sustainable products on a global scale

The emphasis on sustainability in the EU is growing in mandated markets such as the biofuels market as well as the industry’s other outlets (food, feed and technical applications),  This requires practical measures to define best practices and accompany the development of sustainable supply chains up to the European Market.

As a member of the roundtable since 2007, FEDIOL strives to ensure that the RTRS helps cover the sustainability requirements of EU manufacturers and at the same time that this imperative does not endanger the multi-stakeholder nature of the roundtable. It is essential that there is an important buy-in from all players, including the farming community to make multi-stakeholder initiatives a success.

FEDIOL is an affiliate member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. This initiative is developing and over the last year the demand for sustainable palm oil has increased significantly. For the month of March 2010, 136,000 tonnes of certified sustainable palm oil were purchased from RSPO members overtaking the quantity produced that same month.

The increased demand for sustainable palm oil thanks to the EU biofuels legislation is also a great opportunity for the development of RSPO. FEDIOL is instrumental in making the link between the EU biofuels market and the RSDPO initiative. This will help address the needs of the EU crushing industry for raw materials certified sustainable under the EU legislation and provide a new and important out let for RSPO approved operators.
